After many weeks of planning, preparation and work, the new lighting in St. Mary’s is complete.
The ceiling timbers look amazing and have been compared to Noah’s Ark, especially by the children who have already visited.
None of this would have been possible without the generous donation from Carole Thomas, in memory of her husband Richard.
Thank you Carole.
REV. CANON PETER BRISTOW’S RETIRMENT SERVICE
A wonderful service of celebration was held on Sunday as our Vicar Rev. Canon Peter Bristow retired, after 17 years of Ministry in our Benefice. Here are a few pictures which sum up what a marvelous occasion this was. We all wish Peter and the Family all the very best for the future.
THE HERMITAGE ENSEMBLE OF ST.PETERSBURG
On 29 March, St Mary’s was privileged to host the Hermitage Ensemble, a group of five male voices. Although the Ensemble has been visiting the UK for many years, this is the first time they have been to Boston Spa – and it won’t be the last!
The singers divide their time between opera, concerts and teaching at the St Petersburg Conservatoire. Although much of their work is in Russia, they have sung throughout Europe, including appearances at Covent Garden. The group consists of three tenors, a baritone and a bass; as we heard, a Russian bass can sing much lower than other basses. They sang with amazing power and there is always something about Russian singers that gives you the feeling that their voices are travelling across hundreds of miles of the steppes
The first half was Russian Orthodox sacred music; it is always sung unaccompanied since an organ or instruments were thought to be theatrical and therefore morally suspect. Although Orthodox music was originally a blend of Greek and Byzantine influences, it turned into a distinctively Russian tradition. The second half consisted of Russian folksongs with a lot of jollity and musical conversation.
A special thank you to those who provided beds for the singers and let them experience our traditional warm welcome.
